The Rich History of Lillington
Lillington exists because Harnett County needed a seat of government. When the county was carved out of Cumberland County in 1855, commissioners chose a ferry crossing on the south side of the Cape Fear River, then known as Long Creek Village.
The town was renamed for Colonel John Alexander Lillington, who led 150 minutemen at the Battle of Moore’s Creek Bridge in February 1776. The state formally chartered the town on March 4, 1903, on 100 acres bought by the county near the river crossing.

Downtown centers on Main Street, where the 1898 Harnett County Courthouse and historic storefronts sit a few blocks from the river. The newer neighborhoods spread along NC 210 and US 401, mixing older homes with subdivisions filling in toward Campbell University.
