The Rich History of Hope Mills
Hope Mills traces back to 1766, when the wealth of water power and timber drew lumber operations, a saw mill, a grist mill, and a pottery business to the area. In 1839, construction of the first cotton mill powered by the Hope Mills Dam was completed, and the town’s industrial era began.
By the mid-1840s the Hope Mills factory was the largest cotton mill in North Carolina, and by 1890 the village was the second-largest community in Cumberland County. The town was incorporated in 1891 as Hope Mills Number One. The original mill was burned by Sherman’s troops during the Civil War.
Neighborhoods and Streets of Hope Mills
Hope Mills today is anchored by the lake and the rebuilt dam, with neighborhoods spreading out from the historic town center into the surrounding Cumberland County terrain. The lake itself was unintentionally drained in 2003 when the earthen dam failed during heavy rain, and the new dam was completed in 2008 to refill it.
