The Rich History of Four Oaks
Four Oaks was named by Colonel R. R. Bridgers in 1886 for four large trees that grew from a single stump on property owned by Kinchen Barbour. The town was one of several founded along the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad as it cut through Johnston County.
Four Oaks incorporated in 1889, when it had a post office, a public cotton gin, saw and grist mills, a general store, a church, and a population of twenty-five. The railroad depot and cotton platform turned the town into the leading cotton market in Johnston County by the early twentieth century.

Downtown Four Oaks centers on Wellons Street, which doubles as US 301 through the historic commercial core. The Four Oaks Commercial Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.
Community and Lifestyle
Four Oaks families fall under the Johnston County Public Schools system, with Four Oaks Elementary and Middle Schools in town and high schoolers traveling to South Johnston High in the surrounding district. The Boon Hill historic district and the surrounding farm country give the town a rural character that has held through the decades of suburban growth elsewhere in Johnston County.
Bentonville Battlefield, the site of the last major Civil War battle in the eastern theater, sits a short drive northeast of Four Oaks and brings history visitors to the area year-round.
