The Rich History of Dunn
Dunn started as a settlement called Lucknow, a small hamlet in the shadow of Averasborough on the Cape Fear River. After the Battle of Averasborough in 1865, residents began moving inland to Lucknow, and the town was renamed Dunn in 1873 in honor of Bennett Dunn, who supervised construction of the Wilson-to-Fayetteville railroad.
Dunn was officially incorporated on February 12, 1887. It started its working life as a logging town and a turpentine distilling center, and the railroad that came through in 1886 turned it into the agricultural and manufacturing hub that anchors southern Harnett County today.

Dunn’s downtown has earned the All-America City designation twice for its preservation efforts. The historic commercial district still anchors Cumberland Street between the railroad tracks and US 421.
