The Rich History of Coats
Coats began as a crossroads settlement called Troyville. James Thomas Coats, an elder and prominent local figure, bought 706 acres from the Daniel Shaw heirs in 1875 and opened a general store on the land.
When the Cape Fear and Northern Railroad came through, the settlement took on the Coats name in his honor. The town was formally chartered by the North Carolina General Assembly on March 4, 1905.
