Brogden takes its name from the Brogden family, English Quakers who settled the area during the colonial period. The community grew up around the farms and crossroads that defined rural Johnston County in the 1800s.
The settlement was once known as Grabtown, a name still associated with its most famous resident. Ava Gardner, the Hollywood actress, was born here on Christmas Eve in 1922.
